Following is a timeline that lists births and deaths of notable personages.
This section is a listing for a few people prior to 600 A.D.

The primary purpose of this timeline is to provide a beginning point for persona
research by listing individuals that SCA members can investigate. Research on
these individuals will help members determine historic events that would impact
the lives of their personas.
--------- {See: Developing a Persona}

Secondarily, the timeline gives a sense of either solidarity or turmoil of a country by showing the "turn-over rate" of ruling nobility, thereby giving some insight into the historical power struggles.

Thirdly, the timeline gives rudimentary examples of naming practices of various countries, at least amongst their nobles. [Note, however, that many times the name listed is what the name would be once translated or anglicized into our language.]

Fourthly, research on the artisans listed in the timeline can lead individuals to artwork that can directly show styles and perspectives of the period.

Please note that this list, by no means, contains all the noteworthy people throughout history, or even of the Middle Ages. The listing contains those individuals most commonly cited, or noted, to have had an impact upon their country or time period.

The format of the timeline first lists the year of the information. Any dates that are marked with "c" denotes a circa date, and will be listed prior to a definite date. (i.e. c 1000 will be listed before 1000.) Next the name of the person is listed. Any epithets or alternate names the person is known by is listed in parentheses. Then their occupation or reason for notability is listed. Listed finally is whether the year is their birth date or death date.

In very rare instances, a date may be marked with a "fl". This denotes that all references located to this person deals with the time that the person "flourished", but no birth or death dates are known.

When utilizing the timeline there are some things to take into consideration:

a) Do not confuse a ruler's death with the end of their reign. Granted, many times a ruler was killed, ending their reign but sometimes a ruler stepped down and lived for a period of time following their reign.

b) Many countries were divided into factions at various times. Sometimes there were more than one ruler of a country, each heading a faction.

c) Many times a ruler was ruling more than one country, sometimes with a different name or title in each country.

DISCLAIMER: In a few instances, different sources and authorities would list close but different dates for a person's birth or death. When a correct year could be ascertained, that year was used. When such was not possible, the year was entered as a circa date, for the most probable year. As such there may be a few minor discrepancies. We hope to locate any inaccurate dates and eliminate them in future editions. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
