TORCHLIGHT PROCESSION

by Modar Neznanich

Spiraling waves of amber,

Free-floating like motes of dust

Caught in sunlight, leading down

The mountain in silent homage.

Darkness steps aside in respect

To the fallen and honored dead.

Robes rustle with a velvety hush.

Sandals crunch rhythmically upon

The path of glory and sorrow.

Husky voices waft heavenward

In a chanting serpentine manner.

Infinity later looms the voyage's end;

Stony silent sits the mausoleum

With an inky maw awaiting to consume

Earthly remains of heroes and to

Send their spirits into time immortal.

Raspingly the litters are placed within,

And silent dedications raised on high.

Shuffling footsteps echo away into nothing.

Until next time.
